Widely Absurd Exhibition Curated by Monica Sanchez Argiles

Mark Woods, Hope

Joseph Popper, Runway

“Widely Absurd”, is the first of a series of shows wanting to explore the concept of “absurdity” and people’s resulting struggle for happiness. We live in a time of irresolvable contradictions, where the urge of being happy -at all costs- profoundly differs from our system’s constant pressures for consumption, success and competition. As a result, depression, unhappiness, addictions, anxiety and violent behaviour are the alienating disorders that we have to put up with.

This exhibition looks into the work of seven London-based-artists: Joseph Popper, Mark Rathmell, Cat Roissetter, David Shillinglaw, Mark Stringer, Jazmin Velasco and Mark Woods, to explore their different approaches into the conscious/unconscious acceptance of the dominance of absurdity.  Although their artistic conceptions greatly differ from each other, they all join in the tragicomic idea of absurdity: amusing and entertaining initially but, if sustained, disturbing or even repulsive.

Mark Woods, Hope

The exhbition kicks off with a private view on the 3rd February 2012 at 6.30pm at The Hundred Years Gallery, 13 Pearson Street, London, E2 8JD.  For more infro visit hundredyearsgallery.com

Tailor Gresham Blake Opens Shoreditch Store

gresham blake logo

Brighton tailor Gresham Blake has opened his second London store right in the heart of the ‘ditch’ on Commercial Street.  The move provides further evidence of Shoreditch cementing its position as a hub for up market and high-end fashion.  Gresham Blake specialises in offering tailor made, bespoke, made to mesure suits as well as bespoke shirts for men and women.  The approach to tailoring is described as ‘relaxed’ offering a ‘welcome alternative to Savile Row, while providng the same level of service and quality’.

Prices for men start from £690 for a two piece suit and £550 for women, I understand this is quite reasonably priced for the bespoke suit world, especially for suits of such a high quality.  The launch of the store was supported by celebrities such as actor Ray Winstone and his daughter Jamie, comedian Steve Coogan, Channel 4 news presenter Krishnan Guru Murthy and Mitch Winehouse

You can take a nice little trip down to the Shoreditch Gresham Blake store at 143, Commercial Street, London, E1 6BJ but make sure you don’t head down on a Monday as according to website, it’s closed on Mondays!

You can find out more by visiting www.greshamblake.com

Down the Ditch Competition Giveaway

the nest

It’s competition time here ‘down the ditch’ (Hooray! I hear you cry) as we have 2 pairs of tickets to giveaway for the Cheap Thrills Label Party at The Nest in Dalston on Friday 3rd February 2012.

After a string of sell-out Friday parties, unabashedly putting their Dalston basement venue on the map in 2012,  The Nest returns with four fresh bills for February.  Showcasing both eminent electronic artists already at the forefront of their genre, and exciting up-and-comers who are tipped for huge things this year, The Nest’s new programming acts as a musical snapshot of the scene.  Always underground, credible and dance floor focused, The Nest is quickly becoming a focal point for London’s afterhours electronic output.

We have two pairs of tickets to giveaway to the following event:

THE NEST, 36 – 44 STOKE NEWINGTON ROAD, LONDON, N16 7XJ

FRIDAY 3RD FEBRUARY 9PM – 4AM
CHEAP THRILLS LABEL PARTY
HERVÉ + ADAM F + DETBOI + BAXTA + FEMME (LIVE) + CREWDSON (LIVE)

Cheap Thrills, easily one of The Nest’s favourite labels, returns to the basement disco for another killer showcase.  Genre mashing label boss, Hervé, leads the pack fresh off the back of his recently released solo single ‘Better than a BMX’ and excitingly shares the stage with drum and bass veteran, Adam F, whose vast and far-reaching contribution to the scene has changed the face of 170bpm bass music today.

Supporting Hervé and Adam F will be a selection of Cheap Thrills’ most prolific artists. From the low-end, emo-vocals of Detboi to the more hard-edged club music of Baxta, the dance floor will be jumping from start to finish. Live electronica comes in the form of solo producer Crewdson, whose remix work under the Slowfoot Records imprint is garnering great online support, and the tribal chanting songstress, Femme.

To be in with a chance of winning one of two pairs of tickets to this exciting event, all you have to do is hit the “Like” button on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/downtheditch If you are already a regular here ‘down the ditch’ and have already liked our facebook page you can still enter by registering to our site, you can do so by scrolling to the bottom of our site or by simply clicking here

The winners will be chosen at random from the entries recieved and the competition closes at 5pm on Thursday 2nd February 2012.  Winners will be informed via a message on facebook or via email and you will need to confirm your attendance, so make sure you keep checking your inboxes and Good Luck!
